There is no doubt that robot vision now plays an important role in industry for assembly,rnrecognition, and inspection, but this paper focuses major attention on the vision guidance for machiningrnprocess. The authors firstly give a short review of vision applications in industry and emphasis on therngrowing of market demands. Analysis of the whole system with illumination, camera placement,rncalibration, and active visual feedback control is immediately followed. And the machining characteristicsrnare analyzed with cost, productivity, reliability, safety, flexibility and intelligence. Then the vision tasksrnfor machining is detailedly presented, including recognition, object grasping, tracking, robot control,rnshape measurement, and tool wear monitoring. Finally, a real system applied in industry production isrnintroduced, which cuts tape measure on the zero-line. Comparing with manually machining, it can bernsummarized that the system employed with vision has many advantages, i.e. reliability, stability,rnflexibility, effectiveness, productivity, precision, and automatic operation with minimal humanrnintervention in the setting of an industrial plant.
