Preparation and Characterization of Composites based Glass Fibers with Polyaniline via in-situ Polymerization

Electrically conductive composites of polyaniline (PANI) with glass fibers (GF) were prepared through the chemical deposition of PANI onto glass fibers via in situ polymerization. FTIR spectroscopy indicated that the glass fibers were coated with PANI. The PANI contents (wt.%) of the PANI/GF composites were determined by thermogravimetic analysis (TGA). The conductivity of the PANI/GF composites generally increased with increment of PANI content, and the values measured generally were one or two orders of magnitude higher than those reported in the references. The morphology of the PANI/GF composites was observed by SEM. It showed that most of PANI adhered to the glass fibers at lower PANI content. At higher PANI content, PANI formed into continuous phase, and the glass fibers coated with PANI dispersed in the PANI matrix. The composites prepared can be used as fillers, to improve the conductivity and mechanical properties of polymers.
