This paper presents a student gesture recognition systemrnemployed in a theatre classroom, which is a subsystemrnbelonging to Classroom 2.0. In this study, a PTZ camerarnis set up at the front of the classroom to capture videornsequences. The system first pre-processes the inputrnsequence to locate the main line of the theatre classroomrnand to extract the candidates from the foreground pixels.rnSubsequently, motion and color information is utilized tornidentify the foreground pixels, which are regarded as thernseeds of growth for the foreground regions. The systemrncombines the foreground regions to segment the objects,rnwhich represent individual students. Six student gestures,rnwhich include raising the right hand, raising the left hand,rnraising two hands, lying prone, standing up and normal,rnare classified based on the relationship between thernregions in similar objects. The experimental resultsrndemonstrate that the proposed method is robust andrnefficient.
