OBJECT-ORIENTED PROGRAMMING – WHAT DO STUDENTS THINK OF OBJECTS AND CLASSES?

In this paper we present the results of a study exploringrnstudents’ conceptions of the most fundamental Object-rnOriented Programming (OOP) concepts of “object” andrn“class”. Data was collected from open type questionsrnincluded in a middle-term exam of the undergraduaterncourse “Object-Oriented Design and Programming”. Therncourse uses the programming microworld objectKarel inrnthe first two lessons for presenting the most fundamentalrnOOP concepts and the environment BlueJ. The results ofrnthe study are presented and analysed in conjunction withrnresults from similar studies.
