presented and shown to potentially improve the isolation performance of superstructure in this study.An energy dissipation mechanism of abalone shell,called 'sacrificial bonds and hidden length' and usually found in abalone shells and bones,is simulated and employed into the isolation system.Firstly,the theoretical equations for the base isolation model and several energy-based indices have been presented.The influence of the BIO force component of the proposed isolation system on the designated structural seismic responses has been evaluated through a parametric study.To demonstrate the advantages of this strategy,the BIO isolation system with optimal parameters based on parametric study is numerically investigated with comparison to the conventional linear isolation system.The effectiveness and robustness of the designed BIO isolation system is numerically verified based on the computed peak responses subject to several historical ground motions with both far-fault and near-fault characteristics.
