A joint DARPA/ONR and Air Force demonstration test program was completed on Hydrothermal Oxidationrn(HTO). Testing was performed on an HTO unit developed by DARPA/ONR for use onboard Navy ships to treatrnwastes generated during the normal course of shipboard operations. The demonstration testing was divided into threerncategories. In Category I, ten wastes surrogates were processed separately through the HTO system for 30 cumulativernhours each. The surrogates were motor oil, hydraulic fluid, molybdenum disulfide lube oil, polychlorotrifluoroethylenern(PCTFE), 1,1,1-trichloroethane (TCA), paints, photographic solution, glycols, gray water, and black water. These surrogatesrnwere selected not only as being representative of actual wastes but also to test the HTO system’s behavior withrnlimiting characteristics of typical Navy & Air Force wastes. They represented the maximum and minimum heat content,rnmaximum solids content, maximum salt producing content and maximum corrosive acid formation contentrnwastes. In Category II, ten surrogates were blended together into two feeds, one aqueous and one organic. Each blendedrnfeed was tested in three 10-hour tests simulating expected HTO treatment operation aboard a ship. These CategoryrnII feeds were spiked with high concentrations of zinc, lead, cadmium, and chromium to challenge the effectiveness ofrnthe Heavy Metals Removal System (HMRS). In the Category III tests actual wastes from Navy ships were run in threerntests of 10-hours each. Noise and heat signature measurements were taken during this test. Liquid effluent and corrosionrnsamples were evaluated for Category I, II and III tests. Gas samples were also evaluated for Category II tests. Thisrnpaper will present an overview of the demonstration tests, test results and test conclusions.
