One of the key problems in implementing environmentally friendly power technologies such as solar/photo-voltaic (PV) and wind-based power generation is the introduction of harmonic pollution to the power grid by such generating technologies. This paper proposes a cost-effective solution to the problem using a type of passive filtering based on a standard PID (Proportional-Integral-Derivative) filter implemented as an output-side RLC circuit. The paper presents extensive PSCAD/EMTDC simulations of the system and demonstrates the economic and technical feasibility of this approach. PSCAD/EMTDC is a software package developed by the Manitoba HVDC Research Centre. This paper also presents the establishment of a wind turbine and solar panel test-bed.
