Multi-phase electric machines, supplied from multi-phase converters, are considered in applications such as electric ship propulsion, electric and hybrid-electric vehicles, traction and in aerospace. However, conventional three-phase PWM techniques, if applied in multi-phase voltage source inverters (VSIs), do not utilise all the potential benefits that multi-phase systems have to offer. In this paper, a comprehensive analysis of SVPWM algorithms for a control of a symmetrical six-phase VSI, based on vector space decomposition technique, is presented. Developed schemes are applicable to different ranges of input reference voltage and result in different harmonic content of output phase voltage. Simulation and some experimental results are presented for all analysed schemes. Performance of the presented schemes has also been investigated in terms of THD of the output voltages and DC bus utilisation.
