Modern UPS systems are almost always backed up by Lead-Acid batteries and with gensets for lengthy power outages. GE has continuously evaluated emerging energy storage technologies, including flywheels, supercapacitors, SMES, advanced batteries and systems based on compressed air. This paper provides an evaluation of alternative Energy Storage Systems with respect to the most important requirements for UPS applications such as high reliability and availability, low initial and life-cycle cost, long service life, low volume and weight, large operating temperature range and low environmental impact. The costs and performances of most viable systems are compared to standard systems based on Lead-Acid batteries.
