ALSIC sup TM, an aluminum metal matrix composite, is quickly becoming the material of choice in many new system designs where low weight, good thermal conductivity, tailored coefficient of thermal expansion and high stiffness are the key design parameters. The superior combination of properties specific to ALSIC products yield significant performance advantages over competing electronic material systems. As a result, ALSIC products have started to rapidly penetrate the aerospace and defense industries, as well as the commercial electronic markets. SiC reinforced metal matrix composites are currently produced by two competing processes: the primex sup TM, pressureless metal infiltration process, and the PIC sup TM, pressure Infiltration Casting process. THis paper will describe the basic differences between those processes and will emphaxize the performance advantages fo producing ALSIC products using advanced forming's comosite PIC sup TM process.
