Hot isostatically pressed (HIP) near net shape (NNS) components in stainless steels and Ni-bas alloys are used in a wide range of applications. Often these components are used in harsh environments putting high demand on mechanical properties and corrosion resistance. Cleanliness and low oxygen content are critical parameters for good mechanical properties and corrosion resistance in PM stainless steel. Low temperature impact toughness is a very important requirement for most applications of duplex stainless steel and its connection to oxygen content is shown in the work at hand. Previously unachieved levels of cleanliness in PM stainless steel are also shown to provide good material characteristics in HIPed material. The effect of low oxygen content, high cleanliness from non-metallic inclusions and superior process control on corrosion resistance and mechanical properties is explained.
