When analysing the compaction of composite powders it is in general assumed that one of the powder materials is rigid while the other one deforms at loading. This is a very good approximation for ceramic/metal composites but may not be so when the composite consists of two metals. In the present study, in order to assess the mechanical behaviour in such a situation, finite element calculations are used to analyse contact between two deforming particles with different material behaviour. In particular, the influence from the deformation of the (relatively) harder material is studied and discussed with discrete element method (DEM) simulations of cold compaction in mind.
