Sintered Fe-based materials are widely used for valve seats of automobile engines, since they exhibit proper mechanical properties and excellent wear resistance. In recent years, the operation conditions of valve seats have been severe due to the requirement of improving engine performance. To endure these conditions, the sintered valve seats are fabricated by the addition of a large amount of Co-contained hard particles and the complex production process involving Cu infiltration. We developed valve seat alloys of Fe-Al system which can be produced by a simple process of press-sinter and eliminate expensive elements. It was found that the newly developed materials exhibit superior wear resistance to the conventional ones.
