Cutting force is a machining parameter that sums up the interaction between tool and stone during stone machining. Modelling cutting force allows the optimisation of machining by an appropriate choice or design of the machine tool or of the process parameters. Cutting force strongly depends on the properties of tool and stone. Tool inserts with thin-film coatings constitute the newest tool material; they have not been applied to stone turning up to now. This work aims to verify if a single tip tool is able to turn stone. In particular a CVD diamond tool has been taken into account. This work investigates the relationship between the cutting force and process parameters in turning of stone with a CVD tool. A model of cutting force has been identified and tested for the process conditions most interesting from an industrial point of view. The results show that the model may be used to predict cutting force and, therefore, improve the understanding of stone turning process.
