In most fluting and linerboard production the key challenges are to achieve the required dry strength, to minimize retention (drainage) chemicals costs and to maximize machine speed. Online measurements and closed loop wet end chemical controls contribute to meet these challenges. This paper gives a resume how a step-by-step improvement based on online equipment can be achieved. A "particular eye" is kept on drainage and how to control it. Mondi Packaging is one of the world's largest producers of paper and board packaging. At their paper mill in Ramsbottom, the so-called Holcombe Mill, Mondi Packaging has two paper machines, H2 and H3. Approximately ninety employees produce roughly 100,0001 fluting and liner per year. The paper machine H2 at Holcombe Mill (Figure 1) produces fluting and linerboard with a basis weight range of 110-180 g/m~2. With a width of 2.65 m and a speed of 250 m/min to 450 m/min a capacity of 60,000 tpy is reached.
