HORIZONTAL DIRECTIONAL DRILLING INSTALLATION OFSEGMENTED PVC WATERMAIN PIPE IN RICHMOND, CANADA

The City of Richmond is part of the Greater Vancouver Regional District in BritishrnColumbia, Canada and is located on a flood plain with elevations ranging fromrnapproximately 0.6 metres to 2.5 metres above sea level. These physical attributesrnpresent numerous challenges and opportunities with underground utility design andrnconstruction. Design and construction of water mains in combination with soft soil,rnriver delta ground conditions in particular lends itself to trenchless constructionrnopportunities.rnThe City established an Asbestos Cement water main replacement program in thern1990's and the Shellmont watermain replacement project was designed to bernundertaken using the conventional "open trench" procedure. The contractor proposedrnthe use of HDD and segmented Cobra Lock PVC C900 DR18 pipe as an alternative,rn"trenchless" method as an innovative opportunity and one that would reduce costs andrnprovide many tangible benefits to residents adjacent to the work. Implementation ofrnthis alternative method proved to be successful and was recognized as an opportunityrnfor future water main installation work.
