According to geographical features of energy sources and power loads in China, Ultra-high Voltage (UHV) transmission has become necessary because Chinese power demands increase rapidly with fast economic growth. Tower foundation is an important part of UHV transmission. In this paper, the author mainly presents the study and practice of UHV tower foundation technology in China. Firstly, the UHV transmission line foundation design methods including the typical strength coordination of line components and strength design of tower foundation were introduced. Secondly, in order to achieve a minimum cost for a given level of reliability and safety, the main principles for foundation type selection and optimization have been chosen. Thirdly, typical foundation types, foundation design schemes and their subsequent calculation theory have also been shown according to the demands and characteristics of the loads, the landform and geological condition of the UHV transmission. Finally, environmental protection countermeasures are made to improve the designing level. All these research results are relevant to the optimal design of the UHV transmission line foundations.
