Study and practice on tower foundation of UHV transmission in China

According to geographical features of energy sources and power loads in China, Ultra-highVoltage (UHV) transmission has become necessary because Chinese power demands increaserapidly with fast economic growth. Tower foundation is an important part of UHVtransmission. In this paper, the author mainly presents the study and practice of UHV towerfoundation technology in China. Firstly, the UHV transmission line foundation designmethods including the typical strength coordination of line components and strength design oftower foundation were introduced. Secondly, in order to achieve a minimum cost for a givenlevel of reliability and safety, the main principles for foundation type selection andoptimization have been chosen. Thirdly, typical foundation types, foundation design schemesand their subsequent calculation theory have also been shown according to the demands andcharacteristics of the loads, the landform and geological condition of the UHV transmission.Finally, the comprehensive countermeasures are made for the purpose of environmentalprotection and conservation of water and soil. All these research results are relevant to theoptimal design of the UHV transmission line foundations.
