The effect of different process routes on the three dimensional molecular orientation of two very different polymers: a nmatic liquid crystal polymer PMDA-ODA polyimide (PM) and the noncry stalline polymer polyaniline emeraldine base (PANI) have been examined and compared. The fabrication routes examined included spin coating and film casting with subsequent deformation of the fabricated films. Combining the three measured principle refractive indices of a sample with the intrinsic optical properties of the polymer, has allowed the absolute orientation of the films to be determined. This in turn has permitted the simultaneous representation of the orientation developed, both during different fabrication processes and by different polymers, on the same figure. Such information is crucial for the fabricator or investigator who wishes to etermine the best polymer and least expensive route th the desired end-use packaging application.
