Photodynamic therapy (PDT) utilizing PhotofrinR for treatment of early esophageal cancer

Abstract: Four lesions of early carcinoma of the esophagus found during endoscopic biopsies in three patients were treated with photodynamic therapy. Follow-up biopsies over 9 - 24 months remain negative for carcinoma. Endoscopic ultrasonography is essential for proper staging and treatment planning for these patients. Photodynamic therapy may provide an alternative to surgical resection for early esophageal carcinoma or severe dysplasia in Barrett's esophagus.!22
