A rigorous semi-analytic approach to the modelling of coupling, guiding and propagationrnin complex microstructures embedded in photonic crystals is presented. The method, based onrnBloch modes and generalized Fresnel coefficients, is outlined and a variety of applications of therndesign tool are presented.
