Expandable sand screen (ESS) is a sand control technique thatrnhas the potential to give a lower skin and therefore betterrnproductivity than other conventional sand control techniques,rnsuch as internal gravel packs (IGP’s), openhole gravel packsrn(OHGP's), and stand-alone screens. However, welldocumentedrnfield cases in public literature that confirm thisrnpotential have not been reported to date.rnOver the last few years, Brunei Shell Petroleum (BSP) hasrnapplied the ESS technology in both cased hole and openholerncompletions. The productivity data of the ESS-completedrnzones have been used in a comparison with data from similarrnzones completed with more conventional gravel packs.rnIn openhole applications in BSP's S.W. Ampa andrnChampion fields, production results show that the ProductivityrnIndex (PI) of ESS-completed reservoirs is equal to or betterrnthan expected, with one ESS zone having some 50% higher PIrnthan similar OHGP zones. In cased hole applications in thernChampion West field, the productivity of reservoirs completedrnwith ESS is similar to or better than the productivity of similarrnreservoirs completed with IGP's. In all cased and openholernESS-completions, no indications of sand production, screenrnplugging or screen erosion have been observed to date.
