Total sulfur mass balance over the grit chambers have shown that MM represents a negligible fraction of total sulfur removed in this system. However, this study showed that MM and H2S emissions are relatively important in primary treatment process. MM emission in primary systems seems to be directly linked to (ⅰ) the biomass formation in the collection system impacting the active fraction to be fed to the primary system, (ⅱ) methionine concentration present in the wastewater as a product of protein hydrolysis in the collection system and (ⅲ) ORP conditions applied through management of the sludge blankets. Due to these factors, odor measurements in summer were about 50% higher than in winter. Ongoing year-round measurements will hopefully clarify the different aspects and more clearly link influent characterization and behavior in the collection system to the MM production and emission during primary treatment.
