Since the early 1990s, the City of Miami Beach has developed and implemented a water and wastewater systemrnassessment and rehabilitation program. The City owns and operates retail water and wastewater systems servingrncustomers within the municipal limits that range from approximately 85,000 residential customers to at peak timesrnapproaching 400,000 residents and visitors.rnThe City’s potable water supply is provided exclusively by Miami-Dade Water and Sewer Department (MDWASD)rnvia four supply mains. The City’s sanitary sewer system collects and transmits sanitary flow from throughout thernmunicipal limits and from three neighboring municipalities. Wastewater is discharged via a singular force main tornMDWASD’s Central District Wastewater Treatment Plant.rnThese four supply mains and wastewater force main are the foundation behind water and wastewater management inrnMiami Beach. Damage to this infrastructure has the potential to adversely impact water management in this thrivingrntourist and residential community of South Florida.rnThis paper presents the trenchless technologies implemented by the City to evaluate, prioritize and manage theserncritical pieces of infrastructure. The paper will discuss previous failures, historic and current condition assessment,rnregulatory drivers and rehabilitation strategies.
