PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a wastewater treatment apparatus for treating wastewater containing metal ions without adding organic substrates, methane and ammonium ions. A wastewater treatment apparatus 1 includes a wastewater treatment tank 10, a carrier 11, and a microbial community (sludge S). The wastewater treatment tank 10 holds wastewater containing divalent manganese. The carrier 11 is held in the wastewater treatment tank 10 and causes the attached microbial community to grow on the surface. The microbial community is retained on the carrier 11 and cultured under aerobic conditions by supplying inorganic carbon to oxidize divalent manganese in wastewater without the addition of organic substrates, methane, and ammonium ions. Produces manganese oxide. Manganese-oxidizing bacteria, methylotrophic bacteria (methylotroph), etc. grow and are retained in the microbial community. [Selection diagram] Fig. 1
