Kenaf, in recent years, has had a great deal of attention as a possible papermaking fiber, especially for the U.S. In the U.S., work with kenaf (Hibiscus cannabinus) as a papermaking fiber developed out of an extensive search for possible annual crops for papermaking fibers at the Northern Regional Research Center, USDA, Peoria. This was the program. "A Search for New Fiber Crops", which looked at over 600 different species and cultivars as possible fiber crops for the U.S. (1,2,3). Properties of some of the more promising species are shown in Tables I,II. Laboratory pulps and papers were produced from at least 97 of them (4) and the bast were evaluated further. Table III. From these, kenaf was selected as the most promising as a fiber crop for the U.S.
