The engine crank bore is one of the key features in engine design. High quality manufacturing is required for high quality of the crank bore. Finite element model based analysis for engine crank bore distortion, induced by cutting force and workpiece / cutting tool compliance, is presented in this study. It gives reasonable prediction of the quality of the machined engine crank bore. Some crank bore quality (tolerance) measurements are also simulated following the FEA analysis. They can be used to correlate to the part prints to verify if a manufacturing process is meeting specific part tolerance requirements. This method can provide valuable information during the preliminary manufacturing process design. The predicted machined crank bore distortion can be used to refine engine structure design as well as cutting tool design to minimize workpiece distortion and maximize tooling stiffness.
