The conflict between comfort and handling causes the tuning of a passive automotive suspension alwaysrnto be a compromise. The fixed damping characteristic cannot be optimal for every driving condition.rnSemi-active and active suspensions give more freedom since they offer a variable damping characteristic,rnwhich can be changed according to driving conditions. The control objective is then to improve bothrncomfort and safety by reducing the car body accelerations and the tyre force variations respectively. Thernsemi-active and active suspension controllers presented are based on the skyhook principle. Using invertedrndamper models, the desired forces are converted into the appropriate control signals. The influence of therntopmount stiffness and the (hydraulic) compressibility in the system, can be taken into account byrnadditional feedback loops. This paper presents the experimental results of an extensive comparisonrnbetween a passive, a semi-active and an active suspension system performed on a quarter car test rig.
