A lightweight wood frame multi-story apartment building complex is required to comply withrnImpact Insulation Class (IIC) and Field Impact Insulation Class (FIIC) rating requirements setrnforth in the 2003 International Building Code. Extensive field testing of existing floor/ceilingrnassemblies revealed deficiencies of up to 15 points compared to the minimum ratingrnrequirements given in the code. Designing a cost effective solution to achieve code compliancernincluded assessing the existing field conditions, analyzing the feasibility of modifying thernconstruction, and evaluating the overall acoustical performance of proposed solutions. This casernstudy presents findings from destructive testing of floor/ceiling assemblies, results from over 60rnon-site FIIC tests of small sample configurations with various resilient floor underlaymentrnmaterials and finish flooring options, and a summary of the proposed solution.
