HOW DO DESIGNERS OF WEB SITES TAKE INTO ACCOUNT CONSTRAINTS AND ERGONOMIC CRITERIA?

Due to the extensive growing of the Internet, more and more sites are presented on the World Wide Web (Web). The use of HTML authoring tools (and, especially, WYSIWYG authoring tools) allows not only specialists but also "lay-designers" to design and "self-publish" web sites, either towards professional or personal aims. However, the design of numerous sites presented on the Web can be considered as not satisfying for the users. Towards a better understanding of difficulties encountered by designers of web sites, an experiment was conducted with professional and beginning designers, in order to characterize (1) to which extent they could spontaneously take into account criteria and constraints (especially, related to usability issues), and (2) whether the criteria and constraints spontaneously taken into account were effectively satisfied by the web sites these designers produced. The results allow us to point out cognitive activities for which a support could be specifically useful for designers.
