The Relationship Between the ex ante and ex post Information Systems Evaluation: Reflections from the Literature and the Practice of Evaluating E-Commerce Investments

To date, the evaluation literature has had few contributions that explicitly explore the objectives and timing of the information systems evaluation. Based upon a thorough review of the literature, and interviews with experienced practitioners and researchers, this exploratory research seeks to redress this deficiency. The findings suggest that, in the context of e-commerce investments, the objectives of evaluation change over the course of a project and that project managers should explicitly articulate their evaluation objectives to ensure that they adopt the most appropriate methods.
