A Series of polyimide containing azo chromophore side-chain from 4,4' prime -(hexafluoro — isopropylidene) diphthalic arhydride (6FDA), pyromellitic dianhydride (PMDA) and nonlinear optical chromophore had been successfully prepared by a condensation polymerization and a post-azo-coupling reaction successively. Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy and ~(13)C Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) spectra results confirmed the formation of designed chemical structures. These nonlinear optical polyimides possess large second order optical coefficients (d_(33)) and thermal stabilities exceeding 490 degree.
