A full-scale Nanoiron application was performed at the Public Service Electric and GasrnCompany (PSE&G) Trenton Switchyard on Klockner Road in Hamilton Township, New Jerseyrn(referred to as the "Klockner Road Site" or "Site") to treat groundwater contaminated withrnchlorinated hydrocarbons. Previous studies related to the use of Nanoiron to treat contaminatedrngroundwater at this Site included bench-scale testing at GTI and pilot-scale testing at the Sitern(the results of these tests were presented at the NGT II Conference in Phoenix, AZ in Februaryrn2004).rnThe Nanoiron was applied to approximately a one-half acre area of the Site. The Nanoironrntreatment was conducted in two phases of injection. The Nanoiron slurry was injected at arnconcentration of up to 30 g/L. In total, 3,000 pounds and 1,500 pounds of Nanoiron were injectedrnduring the first and second phases of the injection programs, respectively. The Nanoiron wasrnapplied in a 20-foot injection grid pattern. Post-injection groundwater sampling, analysis, andrnevaluation were performed for each of these phases.rnGroundwater contaminants targeted for reduction consisted of 1,1-dichloroethane (1,1-DCA),rn1,1-dichlorethene (1,1-DCE), 1,1,1-trichloroethane (1,1,1-TCA), 1,2-dichloroethane (1,2-DCA),rnand trichloroethene (TCE). Full-scale Nanoiron injection at the Site demonstrated that therngroundwater contaminants were significantly reduced to levels that now could potentially bernreduced further by Monitored Natural Attenuation to achieve the New Jersey Department ofrnEnvironmental Protection (NJDEP) Groundwater Quality Standards.rnBoth the pilot-scale and full-scale testing programs were performed by PARS Environmental,rnInc. (PARS) of Robbinsville, NJ at the Site, under the management of PSEG ServicesrnCorporation of Newark, NJ (PSEG SC), using funding provided by the Gas Research Institutern(GRI) of DesPlaines, Illinois.
