For the determination of lewisite I or its main hydrolytic products by GC-based methods, conversion with a dithiol to a dithiarsenoline appears to be the method of choice at the moment. Several of these procedures have been tested on water and soil samples and detection/identification at a ug/l (ppb) level is achievable. The procedures are applicable in the field. Despite the fact that LC-based methods are more direct and do not require extensive sample preparation for the determination of lewisite I decomposition products, they are still in their infancy and more work needs to done in this area. CE is not considered as a very rugged technique and small injection volumes are a major drawback to achieve low detection limits.
