ECOLOGICAL ENGINEERING FOR MINEWATER RESOURCES IN COALFIELDS

Among the subsidiaries of Coal India, Eastern Coalfields Ltd. has the maximum 117 mines operating over 1620 sq. km. in Bengal and Jharkhand, of which 96 are underground and 21 are opencast mines and the coalfield is the oldest in Jndia with most of the workings deep and gassy. There are about 775 main pumps and 950 auxiliary pumps of different capacities, dewatering from the various mines of ECL. The company is making multifarious uses of mine water, liko in hydraulic stowing of sand in mine voids, irrigation of land and crops as also for domestic water supply. ECL has 120 filter plants, with installed capacity 19.82 million gallons per day, covering population of 533770 people. The company is taking steps to ensure so that ground water is recharged with minimum run-off to the river systems. The Environment Risk Assessment and Management Plan (ERAMP) of Asansol Durgapur region, mostly coalfield areas, was sponsored by Asansol Durgapur Development Authori ty (ADDA), in Burdwan dlstrict of KB and has been completed in May '97. Two Eco-parks have been developed and more are in progress. The company has devised an unique Green Belt Plan, in which the company land not in use is proposed to be given on license agreement to Govt. agencies for afforestation or agriculture or acguaculture in the unused queries of the company, which will help solve local unemployment problem, while enhancing environment, ecology, food production and economy of the nation.
