CLOSURE PLANNING -A GLOBAL PERSPECTIVE

A review has been produced to provide a technical framework to serve the mining industry in addressing the requirements of commercial companies such as banks and other institutions and national and local legislative authorities, for detailed Mine Closure Planning. The paper provides information regarding a practical, relevant and technical framework to assist industry to: prepare a closure plan based on industry good practice, minimise cost, liability and adverse impacts at closure, define closure requirements based on scientific criteria agreed with regulatory authorities, respond to local climatic and geological conditions. Mine closure planning now forms an integral part of the planning, feasibility studies and environmental assessments for all new mines and quarries. Closure is an increasingly important aspect for existing mining operations. The contents mainly include: mine closure perspectives, closure planning process, closure design, closure implementation for specific mine components, monitoring and financial aspects of closure together with case histories.
