The Infrastructure Exists -- 'The Role of Electric Utilities in Delivering Sustainable Hydrogen'

In line with its corporate sustainability objectives, British Columbia Hydro will use renewable electricity and its electrical distribution network to produce hydrogen for industrial, transportation and portable power markets. Hydrogen is part of a diversification strategy to move the company into a sustainable energy market that hold significant potential. BC Hydro began testing the market feasibility of hydrogen as a vehicle fuel when it supplied electricity to produce hydrogen for three fuel cell buses in the Vancouver area from 1998 to 2000. As a part of its new hydrogen business, BC Hydro is building on this experience to develop the hydrogen infrastructure for British Columbia. This paper discusses several projects and the company's outlook on the future of the hydrogen business.
