In this paper, an anisotropic circular cylindrical shell has been analysed using transverse shear deformation theory. Solutions are obtained for various elastic responses under two sets of boundary conditions, viz. (1) Under internal and external pressure loadings, and (2) Under axial pull. Variations in elastic responses are presented as a function of non-dimensional parameters of shell geometries. Numerical results have been found at different intervals of shell length and through the shell thickness. Different composite material systems have been considered for searching an economical fibre lay-up pattern to meet the requirements of tangential and axial loadings. Finally, a design methodology is presented and a design formula is suggested.
