Galvanic Cathodic Protection of Corroded Reinforced Concrete Structures

Cathodic protection is an effective technique to extend the service life of reinforced concrete structures. Historically, impressed current cathodic protection systems have been used. These systems are effective, especially when they are properly installed and maintained. Galvanic cathodic protection systems are sometimes portrayed to provide only limited protection for a short period of time, but properly designed and installed galvanic systems can provide cathodic protection performance benefits with minimal annual maintenance and anode life of 30+ years. This paper presents a series of case studies on the application of galvanic cathodic protection to provide long term cathodic protection to reinforced concrete structures. Case studies will include long-term monitoring of field projects where cathodic protection criteria has been achieved for over 15 years.
