Broadcasters over the last decade have migrated to arndigital platform and discovered the challenges ofrnmanaging technology that is dynamic and oftenrnchanging. While rapid technological advancementrnbrings many benefits, it also presents many challengesrnnot the least of which is an accelerated obsolescencerncycle. The complexity of the digital age is furtherrncompounded, for the broadcaster, as the explosion ofrnnew media types and delivery methodologies presentsrnthe constant challenge of enriching, enhancing andrnrepackaging content for ever expanding number of newrndelivery platforms.rnAs a result, today's broadcaster experiences thernorganizational and managerial issues of controlling anrnever growing number of segmented systems andrndistinct networks, databases, and applications that defyrnunification and exacerbate the struggle to maintainrncontrol over an ever expanding inventory of content.rnWhile an ever growing number of Digital AssetrnManagement Systems offer a solution for contentrnmanagement these systems usually require thernstovepipe or a master or "über" database to coordinaterndata from multiple content creation applications. Thisrnauthoritative über database model can manage facilityrnwide content and provide a workable solution, but itrnrequires a meticulous workflow to control the datarnimport/export and synchronization for accuracy.rnFurther, broadcasters must be willing to commit to andrninvest in a rigid and inflexible solution.rnIn looking for an alternative solution for content andrntechnology management one must look to how thernworld's largest repository of content, The Internet orrnWorld Wide Web, is handling its data synchronizationrnand management issues. The World Wide WebrnConsortium (W3C) which develops interoperablerntechnologies and standards for the Web has defined onernstandard the Resource Description Framework (RDF).rnResource Description Framework (RDF) is a computerrnlanguage for representing information about datarnresources on the World Wide Web. It is particularlyrnintended for representing metadata about resources andrntheir relationship with other data resources. RDF allowsrnand encourages the mapping of relationships betweenrndata resources. This paper will examine the use of RDFrnand other W3C web standards to create dynamicrnmetadata models for use as a facility wide ContentrnManagement System (or Digital Asset ManagementrnSystem).rnThis paper will outline how the use of RDF in arnbroadcast environment can link relationships betweenrnthe various existing content creations and schedulingrnsystems to each other. Each broadcast resource isrnallowed to exist in an "as is state" to serve as the datarnauthority for the information that they own or create.rnData no longer needs to be imported or synchronizedrnbetween systems and the need for an additional masterrndatabase for content management is thoroughlyrneliminated. RDF can support a scalable and anrnadaptable system where new content deliveryrnapplications and methodologies can be added (orrnremoved) to overall facility operations by simplyrnmapping a new (or eliminating an old) relationship.rnThe paper describes an adaptive long term solution forrnContent Management that will allow for the granularrnsearch and delivery of content over multiple platformsrnand formats.
