摘要

In the Advanced Inorganic Chemistry laboratory students are introduced to different synthetic methods. To become familiar with inert atmosphere synthesis, the students prepare Mo(CO)_(6-n)(CNR)_n complexes. ~(95)Mo NMR spectroscopy is used to monitor the reactions and to characterize the products. The characterization also includes ~(14)N NMR, ~(13)C NMR and infrared spectroscopy. An electrochemistry component can be added as well. The experiment illustrates concepts such as ligand π-acceptor properties, the influence of the ligands on Δ_o, and the trans-effect. The students gain NMR experience working with quadrupolar nuclei at low resonance frequencies.
