The application of the sub-genomic array in vitro highlighted the heterogeneity within the L. monocytogenes species when virulence, stress response and adhesion genes expression is considered. Furthermore, it appears that the origin of the strain plays a role in its capacity to respond to stressful conditions since strain #3, previously isolated from fermented sausage up-regulated a number of genes involved in stress response. The in situ application confirmed the heterogeneity observed in vitro. Furthermore, the results obtained emphasize the need to conduct studies in situ conditions. It was shown that significant differences in expression between the strains can be obtained when a food juice is inoculated while a similar behavior is obtained when a synthetic medium is used.
