STEEL STRIP LAMINATE, A HIGH-PERFORMANCE HYBRID: DEVELOPMENTS AND RECENT APPLICATIONS

Steel Strip Laminate (SSL) is a patented hybrid between glass fibre reinforced epoxy resin (GRE) and ultra high strength steel (UHS). When these two materials are combined, they form a product that combines the high corrosion resistance of glass reinforced resin pipe with the high-pressure performance of steel pipe. Various aspects of this new technology are discussed, including: the manufacturing process, in particular methods of forming and bonding the steel; long term and short term testing of joints and fittings; cyclic testing; chemical resistance; design calculations, and a case history relating to the oil industry.
