Injection molded PEEK materials are currently used as structural components in pressure seals in various applications. One such application is as a Top Adaptor in an UV Stem Packing Assembly for Gate Valves. An important aspect of this component is the ability to withstand high axial compression loads from ultra -high pressure sealing forces without inducing detrimental cracks or other damage during installation and service. The unfilled PEEKS are utilized with no such problems. However, applications at higher pressures and temperatures require stronger filled PEEK compounds. Post-molding thermal treatments have been shown to improve the filled PEEK material's ability to withstand the high compressive strains of the application without experiencing brittle fracture. This paper describes the effects of various thermal treatments on the dynamic properties and crystallinity of unfilled PEEK and filled PEEK materials. A compression test was developed for quality assurance purposes to ensure optimal thermal treatment and evaluate the effects of the heat treatment on the ability to withstand compressive strain. The effects of the thermal treatments on the results of this quality control test were evaluated and will be presented. The effects of the thermal treatments on the structure and properties of the polymer, and how these correlate to compression test results, will also be discussed.
