This study used FEM and Freezing Photoelastic Method to measure the stress at the bolted contact face of clamped surfaces of flange couplings. In particulars, the effect of flange thickness, and the distance between the inner wall and the center of bolt holes on the level of stress, was investigated The optimum shape of flange and the function based on those results was then determined. The results are as follows: (a) The most suitable casing model has a flange whose thickness are approximately 50% of the outside diameter of the casing. (b) As the distance from inner wall to the center of the bolt hole increase, the strength of the contact stress decrease at the inner edge. So the most suitable casing model is one that has the most shortest distance from inner wall to the center of the bolt hole.
