To increase performance and dependability, contemporary and visionary transport systems include advanced computing, and communication innovations. The inclusion of such innovations, however, does not only bring benefits in terms of increased performance and dependability but also contributes to the increase of complexity and uncertainty with the consequent introduction of new dependability threats. Current practices in safety assurance and certification exhibit strengths. However, given the emerging challenges brought by the technological shifts and the increased complexity and uncertainty, these practices also suffer from various and serious deficiencies, which call for a brainstorming on sustainable ways forward. In this talk, the principles of safety assurance and certification in contemporary computer-based and communication-based complex transport systems will be revisited, the challenges posed by the contemporary as well as visionary systems will be discussed and possible ways forward will be proposed for collective brainstorming.
