Energy efficient scheduling and load management in manufacturing systems are gaining popularity from both environmental and economic viewpoint. However, most of the research, especially in load management, has been focused on conventional manufacturing systems. This paper proposes an approach to utilize "for-peak" inventory load management technique into an Intelligent Manufacturing System, using the novel concepts of time-counters and zero-energy machines. Functions of the manufacturing system are modelled using multi-agent approach with autonomous agents making the system dynamic with minimal user interface. The mathematical model of the scheduling problem is formulated as a Mixed Integer Programming (MIP) problem. Scheduling is done for multiple jobs and tasks on multiple machines having different capabilities and machine and routing flexibility. Optimal inventory management and load management schemes are identified while minimizing cost, power consumption and tardiness under production constraints. Simulations have been performed to test the scalability and efficacy of the proposed model.
