A new dynamics model is proposed for the float-counterweighttype wave energy converter considering two degree freedom motions ofthe float: heave and surge. The model is developed from equations ofthe electric generator, force balance at stationary free state, float motionin operation, and the driving pulley motion. A combination of theseequations has resulted in a pair of simultaneous second orderdifferential equations for the heave and surge displacements of the floatto be solved. Components of the flow force have been evaluated fromthe linear progressive wave theory and Morison's equations.Examination of the model using experimental results has shown that itunderestimates the heave and surge displacements, overestimates wiretension, and gives a relatively good agreement for energy gain.
