The mobile location estimation problem in general urban areas is considered. Using the unobstructed distance measurements between mobile stations (MSs) and base stations (BSs), the locations of MSs are estimated. Unlike those methods focusing only on the estimation accuracy, this work also concerns the computational time consumption. A combined convex optimization and weight-product tracking method (CCO-WPT) is proposed in this paper. The proposed method utilizes the convex optimization method (CO) for accurate location estimations and the weight-product tracking method (WPT) to reduce the number of computations. The CCO-WPT method can decrease the computational time/complexity and, at the same time, guarantee a good level of accuracy so that the implemented locating system can serve as many MSs as possible. An optimal schedule is also derived to assign the number of MSs to be located by CO and WPT individually. The advantage of this method is that the combined scheme can provide a trade-off between accuracy and complexity, which makes it possible to deal with the variant number of MSs required be served.
