Annoyance from small firearms shooting noise: A field study in Norway

The Norwegian regulations for shooting noise from small firearms, including limits for both equivalent (Lden) and daytime maximum levels (LAi), are under revision. In order to enable a choice of an appropriate daytime maximum level limit or at least the relevance of such a metric, a field study in the vicinity of four military training grounds in Norway were carried out. The annoyance was determined from a mail survey and the noise exposure was calculated at the residents of the 574 respondents. Results indicate that an equivalent level better explains the annoyance than a maximum level. If noise limits are to be suggested for shooting noise from small firearms based on equal annoyance compared to road traffic noise, the results are 3 dB lower than what is recommended in ISO 1996-1 but considerably higher (10-18 dB) than the existing Norwegian limits.
